Point Proven.... Or Lesson Learned?

About 15 months ago I had the following conversation.

"I don't want an Epidural, So I am not going to have it"

Julianne "Robyn, when you are in labor you would let them put it in your eye to stop the pain".

"It's not where they will stick the epidural (although the thought of a needle going close to the spinal cord seems a little scary) it' how. I have a fear of needles".

Julianne "I'm just saying, think about it. You don't get a Mom of the year award for being brave and not doing the epidural, it's just a needle".

So during my hours of labor, when I thought about puking during contractions and the pain was intense. I remembered this conversation with Juli, but as much as I thought I couldn't do it (without the epidural). I went epidural free to avoid the needle.

You might be asking why I am re-telling this story. Funny story. I cracked a tooth during labor because I clench my teeth (when I sleep too). So a few weeks after I had Jack the tooth broke off. I had to go to the dentist. Three shots later I had a new filling that replaced a portion of the tooth that I cracked off. Then my tooth hurt when I ate. Four months later I decided it was enough to complain. I tried antibiotics, mouth wash, salt water rinse, any thing that might help. I ended up going to the Endodontist.
Yesterday I had to get a root Canal. Four shots later.... no more pain. But I now have to get a crown. So I called my dentist to tell them the endodontist said I probably needed a crown to protect the tooth. My dentist is awesome. They called my insurance company and figure out that I already spent my "allowance" for the year and have to wait until July to get the insurance company to pay for the crown. So what does that mean.... a filling to save the tooth because the endodontist removed the filling my dentist put in the now famous tooth to perform the root canal. What does that mean? At least two more shots for the filling and three for the crown.

So...
Epidural = 1 very large needle

No epidural = 12 shots to fix a tooth cracked during labor because I didn't want one needle in my spine.

Next time I have a baby.... I will probably avoid the epidural.... but I learned a lesson. Take my bite guard to the hospital and wear it. Why didn't they teach that in childbirth class?!?!?!

I cannot believe you went through labor without it! Honestly though, I was quite worried about having a big needle in my back but I went through with it. And I had zero pain. I waited a while to get the epidural and then my DR came and I told me I HAD to get one b/c I was making things too hard on my labor.
I'm sure I would never contemplate having another baby if I hadn't had an epidural!! :)
Good luck with your tooth!! Every mom has her battle scars from labor and delivery right??

Haha! You are a super Mom in my eyes and it has NOTHING (believe me) to do with the fact that you didn't have an epidural! You show off that tooth! You deserve it!
love,Julianne

You may have had more needles in your mouth than you care to have had. However next time you see Geoff ask him how many pt he sees after they have had a "safe" epidural.

You made me remember: Baby mama! you are just trying to avoid all those drugs on your baby for your obly self benefit.... Rob already told me I must have all those drugs before I go to labor because he cannot deal with my pain...
